Limpopo – Four people were killed and nine others injured when a fuel tanker collided with a passenger bus on the N1 road in the Waterberg district, Limpopo, on Sunday morning.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:50 a.m. on March 24 and was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre shortly after 7 a.m. According to Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni, firefighters arrived at the scene to find both vehicles engulfed in flames.
“The bus, which was carrying passengers, and the fuel tanker, with only the driver onboard, were already fully alight when emergency personnel arrived,” Mnguni said, as reported by The Citizen.
Firefighters from the Bela-Bela Local Municipality Fire Brigade Services, alongside a fire engine and rapid intervention unit, assisted in extinguishing the blaze and managing the emergency response.
According to Mnguni, a total of 119 people were involved in the incident, including the truck driver. Four victims succumbed to their injuries, while nine others sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. One person was critically injured, while 104 passengers escaped unharmed.

Emergency responders, including multiple ambulance services, transported the injured to Bela-Bela and Jubilee district hospitals for further medical attention, News24 reported.
Law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service and the National Traffic Police, were on-site to manage the scene, enforce road closures, and investigate the cause of the crash.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene confirmed that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the collision and ensure accountability.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.
