Cape Town – A feral black labrador dog was reportedly finally caught after evading capture for five weeks in Johannesburg’s Randpark Ridge and Bromhof suburbs.
According to The Citizen, Houding, as the community has named him, was initially caught in a trap on January 19 but managed to escape.
He was discovered by a concerned resident and the chairperson of the Bank Road Residents Association, who began monitoring security cameras in the area in an attempt to capture the dog after it was discovered visiting a feral cat colony at Rhema Bible Church North in January, where it ate the cats’ food and destroyed some of the colony’s homes.
Rehabilitation process
Mockler reportedly took to social media to post updates about Houdini.
The social media updates captured the hearts and minds of the community members who attempted but failed to capture him.
Following the unsuccessful attempts, the residents called in an animal trapper, who set up two specially designed large enclosure-type traps.
On Wednesday night, while tugging on a trigger-linked steak, Houdini activated the enclosure doors and found himself trapped.
He was taken to Labrador Rescue and will be rehomed after a rehabilitation process.

In unrelated news, the Cape of Good Hope Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) rescued animals on Tuesday from a filthy, hoarding property in Fish Hoek, Cape Town.
According to the SPCA, the animals, which included a Macaw parrot, were kept in squalid conditions with no access to fresh water. They were also flea-infested and fed rotten food that was dumped on the floor.
The animals were examined and taken to the SPCA for care.
