Cape Town – A 42-year-old man is expected to appear in court after shooting dead one police officer and severely injuring two captains.
Reports alleged that the three police officers were attending to an assault complaint in Snathing Village, eMahlathi in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday when the shooting occurred.
The suspect reportedly refused entry to the police and allegedly shot at the officers as they made their way to their police vehicle.
According to national police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the 48-year-old police Sergeant Nomkhosi Dlamini was fatally wounded and two captains were seriously injured, IOL reported.
“Reports indicate that the three police officers were investing a case of assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm in the area when they entered a house in which the suspect resides.
“Police found themselves under fire, allegedly from the suspect and the sergeant sustained gunshot wounds,” the report quoted Netshiunda as saying.
According to The Witness, the suspect was arrested for murder and attempted murder and is expected to appear at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
A licensed firearm and 18 live round of ammunition were confiscated by the police.
Those who worked with Dlamini described her as a dedicated police officer. They said her death was a tragic loss to the police force, the report said.
