Cape Town – A suspected hitman, believed to be responsible for a series of killings in Lwandle, Cape Town, has been killed in a shootout with police.
The 29-year-old fugitive was wanted in connection with at least 10 cases that resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals between February 2022 and March.
Detectives located the suspect on Sunday night, and during their attempt to apprehend him, he fired his weapon at the police.
“The members retaliated and returned fire, at which point the suspect was fatally wounded … The members found and confiscated a firearm and ammunition which were found in possession of the deceased., ” police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie as saying.
A firearm and ammunition were seized from the deceased.
Additionally, two alleged accomplices, aged 32 and 36, were arrested.
The suspects were connected to several criminal cases, including triple murder, double murder, four murders, two attempted murders (one involving a police officer), a business robbery, and the possession of stolen goods.
They were also believed to be associated with the suspected hitman, who was considered the mastermind behind these crimes.
The two suspects were set to appear in court, and the police intended to oppose bail if applied for.
Additional charges against the suspects were possible.
