Cape Town – A family’s holiday reportedly turned tragic following the death of a 44-year-old holidaymaker during a robbery at their rented vacation home on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.
Reports indicated that a robber barged into the family holiday home in Collin Road, Uvongo, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Shalima Ramsanker was reportedly shot and killed during the tragic incident while the suspect fled with two handbags, reports said.
According to Ramsanker’s nephew Sameer Lockrajh, ten family members had come together for a weekend getaway to celebrate their parents’ anniversary, reported IOL.
She said six of them, including Ramsankers were on the verandah until the early parts of the morning, the report said.

“Shalima was with us and around 4am the alarm went off. She had gone into the lounge to disarm it. We then heard a loud gunshot, which seemed to come from above our heads. The property is a double-storey house and has an open rooftop.
“We rushed into the lounge where one family member was sleeping and we heard a second gunshot which appeared to be much closer to us. Just as the gunshot went off, the rest of us scattered and looked for cover,” the report quoted Lockrajh as saying.
TimesLIVE reported that Ramsanker tried to close the kitchen door when she came face to face with the gunman.
The report said the suspect allegedly shot her before demanding money. Ramsanker tried to flee to a bedroom but collapsed and died.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, police were investigating charges of murder and house robbery.
“It is alleged the victims were accosted by an unknown man who robbed them of their belongings before fatally wounding the woman. The suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot,” Netshiunda was quoted as saying.
