Cape Town — The Eastern Cape Transport Department has warned motorists to stay off the roads, or otherwise remain extra cautious, with strong winds expected in the province.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had earlier predicted a level 6 warning for Tuesday, with winds causing damage to settlements and coastal infrastructure along Plettenberg Bay, and Port Edward, while the areas of Kouga, Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Ndlambe and Nqgushwa, The Citizen reported.
Department spokesperson, Unathi Binsqose, urged motorists to be cautious as winds are expected to be as high as 12okm/hr.
“An intense cold front is expected to pass through the province tomorrow. Due to how deep the low associated with the cold front will be, gale force winds of 35 to 45kts (66 to 90km/h) with gusts of about 50 to 60kts (100 to 120km/h) are expected. Due to these gale force winds persisting for such a long time, significant impacts are expected,” Binqose said.

The SAWS also urged the public to ensure all structures at home are tied down and loose objects are secured, while also travelling at slower speeds while driving.
“Remain indoors if possible. Boats and vessels are advised to stay away from the open sea and seek the shelter of a harbour. In the harbour, moor the boats properly with ample fenders,” the SAWS said.
According to SABC News, Binqose said the department had seen an incident a month prior, where there were fatalities, which they wanted to avoid.
“I remember an accident that happened on the 11th of July on the N6, where strong winds blew over a vehicle. Unfortunately, people died in that accident and I wish not to get on the airwaves and report about anything remotely close to that. It is for that reason that we are urging you as a road user to be extra vigilant and if possible rather stay at home and avoid being on the roads altogether,” Binqose says.
