Limpopo – A 30-year-old foreign national was apprehended by Limpopo police on Sunday, February 16, 2025, following the discovery of stolen copper cables and aluminum scrap in a truck he was driving.
The arrest occurred at approximately 09:30 near Esja on the N1 north of Polokwane.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng said that the suspect was caught during a coordinated operation involving multiple law enforcement units.
“The driver was instructed to stop and permission was also granted to search trailers and a truck. Upon searching 27 ton bags fully loaded with copper cables and five loaded with aluminium scrap metals pieces with an estimated value amounting to R2 million,” Thakeng said.

Eskom officials, who were summoned to the scene, confirmed the copper cables as their property.
“A 30-year-old foreign national was arrested for possession of suspected stolen copper cables and aluminium pieces.
“The suspect will appear on the 18 February 2025 in Polokwane Magistrate’s Court,” said Thakeng.
