Cape Town — South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, has announced two key executive appointments aimed at bolstering its leadership and operational efficiency.
In a statement, Eskom CEO, Dan Marokane revealed that Dr Candice Hartley has been appointed Chief People Officer, while Mr Rivoningo Mnisi takes on the role of Group Executive: Renewables.
Marokane said the appointments complete the utility’s efforts to strengthen its executive team, bringing in critical expertise to drive its strategic goals.
“In the last ten months, we have focused on strengthening our executive team to bring in specialist skills that drive strategy delivery in a fast-moving, competitive marketplace while addressing legacy management control issues highlighted in recent audits,” Marokane stated.

Dr Candice Hartley
Hartley brings over two decades of experience in the financial, industrial, IT, and consumer goods sectors. One of her primary objectives will be ensuring Eskom has the necessary skills to operate effectively in a competitive market.
Her role involves aligning human capital practices and workforce plans with Eskom’s strategy while championing the adoption of technology within the organisation.
Hartley’s extensive resume includes roles at AECI, British American Tobacco (BAT), Pernod Ricard, Lenovo, Barloworld, Standard Bank, and South African Breweries. She also founded Mwangaza Advisory, a consulting firm specialising in customised people strategies.
Mr Rivoningo Mnisi
Mnisi, with over 20 years of experience in digitalisation, innovation, and sustainability, will lead Eskom’s renewable energy initiatives.
He is tasked with advancing Eskom’s pipeline of over 20GW of clean energy projects and positioning the utility as a significant player in the renewables sector.
“Rivoningo will lead the diversification of Eskom’s energy mix as part of our emissions reduction strategy. His previous roles include Chief Strategy Officer at Exxaro and positions at Anglo American,” Marokane said.
Eskom’s 36-Month Strategy
In June 2024, Eskom unveiled a comprehensive 36-month strategy focusing on:
- Increasing the Energy Availability Factor (EAF) to 70% within 12–36 months.
- Returning over 2.5GW to the grid by March 2025 and developing a 2GW pipeline of clean energy projects by 2026.
- Re-baselining cost trajectories and enhancing operational efficiencies.
- Addressing municipal debt with sustainable solutions.
- Completing the unbundling of Distribution and Generation divisions.
- Accelerating a Just Energy Transition.
Marokane emphasised that Eskom remains committed to recovering generation capacity, strengthening governance, tackling corruption, and securing energy sustainability for South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
