Cape Town – A male student at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) is reportedly on the run following the murder of a 23-year-old engineering student at the Ark Royal Residence in Durban over the weekend.
Xolile Mbatha’s body was allegedly found on Sunday morning, reports said.
MUT spokesperson, Bheki Hlophe, said she found it hard to be commenting on the “heartless and brutal killing” of the student, reported TimesLIVE.
“I am at a loss for words to describe this dreadful act [allegedly] performed by a fellow male student at the Ark Royal residence, one of MUT’s externally leased residences. Xolile died on the morning of Sunday,” the report quoted Hlophe as saying.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said police were investigating a murder case, reported IOL.
“On July 31, 2022, at 7.30 am, Point police were called to a residence at Mahatma Gandhi Road where a 23-year-old female was stabbed and killed. It is alleged that the victim was killed by a known suspect following a domestic dispute. She was declared dead on the scene,” the report quoted Gwala as saying.
The report said this was not the first incident to rock the university.
In 2020 Thabani Mzolo, 23 was arrested after he shot and killed his then-girlfriend, Zolile Khumalo in her dorm room in May 2018.
