Cape Town — Emergency services in the Western Cape have battled valiantly to successfully contain the the fires that have been raging throughout the Cape Winelands.
This year’s fire season has devastated grounds and left a trail of destruction in its wake. The Cape Winelands and the Overberg have been hit the hardest, with authorities calling for the area to be ruled a provincial disaster. Anxious farmers were concerned the runaway fires could affect the harvest and have a devastating impact on the wine industry, eNCA reported.
However, there is some reprieve for anxious farmers and residents as the Cape Winelands District Municipality confirmed that emergency teams made significant progress on Friday and that the fires have been contained, although firefighters will remain on high alert, as reported by EWN.
“Mopping up activities will persist, and some smouldering spots may remain after these operations. Teams will continue to monitor and remain vigilant throughout the night,” Cape Winelands District Municipality spokesperson, Anesca Roodt, said.
Overstrand Mayor Annelie Rabie said the municipality is now using aerial firefighting efforts to water bomb the remaining fire at Buffelsjag and Pearly Bay.
