Cape Town – Gustav Rappard, 76, was reportedly found dead after agreeing to sell grass bales to men who arrived at his farm in Delmas, Mpumalanga on Sunday.
According to The Citizen, Rappard and his wife were sitting at their home when they heard a car hoot at the gate.
Rappard went outside to check. He reportedly met six men who said they were there to buy animal feed.
Rappard told them it was a Sunday and he could not help them. However, moments later he decided to assist them.
“The suspects are alleged to have then strangled the old man.
“His body was later found in a barn,” Times Live quoted provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala as saying.
Meanwhile, four of the armed men went into the house where they tied up Rappard’s wife and demanded money from her.
She told them that she didn’t have money. That’s when they searched the house.
The men only left with the couples’ cellphones.
Rappard’s wife managed to walk to the neighbour’s farm to seek help.
A manhunt has since been launched.
“The suspects should be hunted down and brought to book within a short time. It is a disgrace that suspects target defenceless victims,” said Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamelawas quoted as saying.
