Cape Town — The Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) Department of Transport confirmed that 18 people died in a multi-car accident on the N3 at Van Reenen’s Pass.
The department revealed that a minibus taxi, a truck and light motor vehicle were involved in the collision that occurred between 8:30pm and 9pm on Monday on the route from KZN to Gauteng, The Citizen reported.
It is believed that 13 adults and five children died in the accident, with a small baby also left seriously injured after the crash. The N3 remains closed to traffic and the Tugela and Tugela East plazas were closed at the time of the crash.
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) spokesperson, Thania Dhoogra, said traffic was stacked between the Pyramids Motel and Van Reenen Town while emergency services attended to the scene.
According to Dhoogra, traffic was heavily backed up and there were reports of poor weather, heavy mist and dangerous driving conditioons.
“Please reduce speed and remain extra cautious on the roads,” Dhoogra said.
