Cape Town — The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has expressed its concern over the ongoing court challenge between the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Information Regular (IR) regarding the publishing of the matric results in the media.
In a statement, the EFF said the court challenge was an intervention to protect the privacy and information of matriculants whose results have been published in the newspapers and digital platforms.
“The EFF is of the firm belief that the argument by the DBE and racist lobby groups such as AfriForum and others, who claim the release of the results on media platforms is of public interest is shallow and misleading,” EFF spokesperson, Leigh-Ann Mathys said.

The EFF said the the release of the results does nothing but create a chance for ridicule and humiliation of those who may not have performed as well compared to their peers.
“This practice has for decades caused harm on the youth, and in extreme cases, has led to the rise in self-harm by young people who could not bear the pressures of performing poorly or failing matric,” Mathys said.
The party said education should not serve as means for negativity or humiliation.
“Education should never be turned into a rat race of capitalist comparison, wherein one’s worth is determined by their performance ratehr than their efforts, and is subsequently subjected to public scrutiny,” Mathys said.
