Cape Town – A doctor in East London, Dr Karunlingam Chetty, was granted R10 000 bail following a brief court appearance on Monday.
He was accused of defrauding the South African Revenue Service (Sars) of over R1.8 million.
The arrest was carried out by the Hawks’ East London-based serious commercial crime investigation unit in collaboration with Sars and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Chetty was alleged to have under-declared his income between 2015 and 2018.
“During the period between 2015 and 2018 Chetty as a Medical Practitioner allegedly under-declared his income. During auditing Sars picked up some red flags and thus lodged a complaint with the Hawks for an investigation. The investigations revealed that Chetty prejudiced Sars an amount of more than R1.8 Million.
“Chetty was arrested on 21 August 2023 and made a short appearance in East London Magistrate’s court on the same day. Chetty was released on R10 000-00 bail the very same day. The matter was remanded to 19 September 2023 for Regional Court date,” said police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela.
The case has been postponed until September 19 to schedule a regional court hearing.
