Cape Town – Durban’s Smokin’ Joe’s Gypsy King burgers was voted the 12th best burger in the world by over 1,5 million people who took part in the Big 7 Travel survey.
The survey’s ranking system considered editorial experience, critic reviews, customer feedback, location and accessibility, presentation, value for money and atmosphere to determine the 50 Best Burgers in the World 2022.
According to IOL, the burger joint based in Durban also scooped the best burger in Africa after beating the only other South African burger joint on the list, The Dog’s Bollocks in Cape Town, which came in at number 34.

The Durban based burger joint owner, Yusuf Bassa said they’ve improved over the years moving from “somewhere in the 60 on the list in 2019”.
Though Bassa trained as a chef he never worked as one but decided to make his own burgers for night market before owning Smokin’ Joe’s, the report said.
His secret, “The prime beef is ground daily. We make all our own sauces. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. And I want to make sure we keep up those standards. So the pressure is on to stay at that level,” the report qouted Bassa as saying.
