Cape Town – A 35-year-old VW Polo driver was arrested in Mpumalanga following a high-speed chase.
The driver and accomplices allegedly robbed a store in Marapyane, where they assaulted a shopkeeper and stole cash, cellphones, and groceries.
The incident was reported to the police, who later spotted the getaway vehicle along Mmametlhake Road.
“A high speed chase then ensued and when suspects realised that the men and women in blue were not backing down, the driver stopped the vehicle where three quickly got out then took off on foot before disappearing into the nearby bushes to evade the arrest,” police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli said.
Police arrested one suspect in the vehicle and found an undisclosed amount of money, groceries, a music speaker, and sneakers in the car’s trunk.
The arrested man was charged with business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
Preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle belongs to his brother, Mdhluli said.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Mbibana Magistrate’s Court on October 23, 2023.
