Cape Town — Political powerhouse, Marius Fransman, says the City of Cape Town’s (CoCT) donation of R400 000 to sponsor a Palestinian national football team is nothing more than ‘a gimmick’.
The CoCT announced that it will support SAFA’s upcoming exhibition matches against various local invitational football sides.
The City’s sponsorship includes waiver of rental hire costs for the two matches at Athlone Stadium, which SAFA has scheduled for 11 and 18 February. R400 000 will be donated in event support services , including traffic, waste management and related services to ensure a successful event.
Fransman recently launched a a new political party, the People’s Movement for Change (PMC), and denied any links to Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party. He was the former ANC ANC chairperson in the Western Cape, IOL reported.
Fransmann has criticised the city for painting over the Palestinian flag mural in Lavender Hill, and has also criticised the Western Cape government for not supporting national government’s case of genocide against Israel and accused the DA-led structures of stifling views on the ongoing Middle East conflict., EWN reported.
Fransman said the city shouldn’t be applauded for offering free use of the Athlone Stadium or its donation of R400,000 towards the looming Palestinian football matches.
“If the municipality gives a donation to any, whether it’s the minstrels or any local rugby club, they in any case give close to a R400,000 donation, so it’s a gimmick, a gimmick under the blood, the tears and the murder of innocent people in Gaza.”
