Cape Town — KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) experienced a devastating weekend on its roads, with 21 people losing their lives in multiple accidents, including six members of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
Among the fatalities were South African Sugar Association finance executive Olivia Finnemore, her husband Gareth, and their son Garth, a Grade 8 student at Michaelhouse.
The family had been returning home from a Sevens rugby event at Wembley College when the tragedy occurred, IOL reported.
Michaelhouse posted a message confirming the Finnemore family’s involvement in the accident.
KZN Premier Thami Ntuli expressed his condolences to the families and friends of all the victims.
The deadliest incident occurred in a two-vehicle collision on the R622 Mooi Plaza at Greytown Road, claiming 11 lives. Another serious crash on the R74 Kranskop Road involving a taxi left 10 people critically injured and six dead.

KZN MEC for Transport, Siboniso Duma urged drivers to remain cautious, SABC News reported.
“We always talk to our drivers that they must always be cautious, they must always be mindful of the situation in the province because this affects the economy, this also affects the outlook of the tourism in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Working closer with SAPS, working closer as a department of transport we will be visiting certain families so that we could assist,” Duma said.
According to Newzroom Afrika, Duma announced that a team of experienced officials will be deployed to visit the affected families who are going through a very difficult time and measures will be taken to ensure that each family is helped in the way they need it, and the deaprtment will also asist to ensure funeral arrangements are catered for.
