Cape Town – Deputy Health Minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo on Monday provided medical assistance to a passenger in need during a flight from Durban to Cape Town.
He was alerted by a parliamentary staff member that the crew was seeking medical help for an unwell passenger.
“I was alerted by a parliamentary staff, who [was] seated behind me in the plane, that the crew were asking for medical assistance for a passenger who was not well. I quickly moved to the seat where the passenger was. The incident happened an hour before our landing in Cape Town,” News24 quoted him as saying.
Despite not having access to the passenger’s medication, which was in her luggage, Dhlomo stabilised her condition, checked her vitals, and provided oxygen and glucose water with the assistance of the flight crew.
The passenger apparently had diabetes.
According to The Citizen, the department spokesperson Foster Mohale said: “This is in the nature of the deputy minister to contribute towards accelerating healthcare service delivery by regularly visiting health facilities and forensic pathology services around the country to lend his hand through performing post-mortems to enable the families to bury their loved ones on time.”
Paramedics attended to the passenger upon landing in Cape Town, and Dhlomo expressed hope for her swift recovery, thanking the crew and paramedics for their support.
This incident follows a similar one in which Home Affairs Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi provided aid to a sick passenger on another flight.
