Cape Town – Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, a defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has died.
He died on December 10, 2024, at Thelle Moroerane Hospital in Vosloorus, as confirmed by his family.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and son. We confirm his untimely passing on the early hours of 10 December 2024 at Vosloorus, Thelle Moroerane Hospital,” the family said in a statement.
According to The Citizen, Mngomezulu, who represented accused number 1, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, joined the case in October 2023 and had recently participated in court proceedings virtually.
He was expected to cross-examine the lead investigator, Brigadier Bongani Gininda.
Earlier this year, Mngomezulu raised concerns about his safety following a trespassing incident at his residence, which he suspected was linked to his involvement in the high-profile trial, the report said.
His family requested privacy during their time of grief and thanked the public for their support and prayers.
Meanwhile, according to SABC News, legal expert Nthabiseng Dubazana said the death of Mngomezulu was a significant setback for the case.
Dubazana said the death will impact Sibiya’s defence, as the court will need to decide whether he will continue with his current representation or appoint a new attorney.
“So now the court has to determine from the accused whether or not he’s intending to proceed with the matter in person or if he’s going to get a new attorney. And even if it’s the latter, then the new attorney has to be provided with transcripts. So basically, the matter would be postponed for the attorney to have all the information that he has missed – the cross-examination, everything that has happened for him to really prepare and best consult with his client. And then, thereafter, the matter can be set down for the continuation of the trial.”
