Cape Town – Democratic Alliance (DA) mayor in the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality in Limpopo, Marlene van Staden, has died.
Van Staden passed away on Thursday after a long illness.
In a statement, the DA said it was saddened by her death.
“It is with immense sadness that we mourn the passing of DA Mayor Marlene Van Staden.
“Marlene was our first-ever mayor in Limpopo, an incredibly dynamic leader who lived and served the community of Modimolle-Mookgophong well. She will be missed by many – condolences to her family and loved ones,” said the DA.

DA leader John Steeihuisen said he was devasted by the news of her death.
“I am devastated by the terrible news that my friend, colleague and the Mayor of Modimolle-Mookgophong, Marlene Van Staden, has passed away.
“My heart breaks for Marlene’s family, especially her husband and two young boys who are in our thoughts and prayers at this time,” Steeihuisen said.

According to the DA website, Van Staden was born in Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal and she and her family have lived in Vaalwater, Limpopo, since 1989.
She matriculated at Hoërskool Nylstroom in Modimolle and attended the University of Pretoria where she completed a BCom degree, specialising in tourism management. She also held a postgraduate certificate in education and a BCom honours degree in business management, specialising in financial management, through Unisa.
