Cape Town — Eskom announced it’s former executive, Dan Marokane, as their new CEO and he has been tasked with turning the crisis-hit power utility around.
Marokane was announced as the new CEO on Friday 8 December and he will officially take office on 31 March 2024.
“The Eskom Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Dan Marokane as the new Group Chief Executive of Eskom. Mr Marokane returns to Eskom after he and three other executives were suspended following an ethical stand they took against state capture, fraud and corruption,” Eskom said.

Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, announced Marokane on Friday and he believes Marokane will be up to the task due to his experience in distressed organisations, eNCA reported.
Energy expert, Mohammed Madhi, believes political interference could be his downfall.
“We don’t necessarily want someone who is entrenched in the Eskom way of thinking and unfortunately this has always been a problem with the appointees that Eskom has made,” Madhi said.
“The challenges facing Eskom are always very different and we need someone who is able and capable of understanding those challenges and navigating Eskom through those challenges,” he added.
Trade union Solidarity’s Helgard Cronjé says the appointment of the Eskom head is long over-due, SABC News wrote.
“We are glad that the CEO has at last been appointed – it’s been too long. I guess it’s a good thing they appointed someone which Eskom experience. I think that people need to understand Eskom and its difficulties. They need [to have] the experience of working there in the past,” adds Cronjé.
