Cape Town – Heideveld High School has faced criticism on Facebook for allegedly retracting an invitation to a former student, Chelse Leigh Tiemie, who is now wheelchair-bound, to attend their matric ball.
According to IOL, Chelse, who suffered a life-altering accident in 2020, was initially invited to the event but was later informed that the school had exceeded its venue limit.
Her father, Alrich Willis, expressed disappointment and posted about it on social media.
“We were ecstatic when the school offered this to us as a good gesture, seeing that our daughter was part of the school,” he said.
However, after putting in considerable effort to prepare Chelse for the ball, Alrich expressed deep disappointment.
“We prepared, we got her a few dresses to wear, and someone offered to do her hair and her make-up, as well as transport her for this big event.
“They notified me on Friday that they’ve exceeded their limit for the venue.
“How do you do that to people who have been through so much with their child?,” Willis asked.
The report said that the school did not respond to inquiries, and the Western Cape Education Department claimed Chelse’s parents did not RSVP in time.
However, Chelse’s father maintains that he accepted the invitation and expressed his disappointment with the school’s decision, said the report.
