Cape Town – A 15-year-old pupil at Reshegofaditswe Secondary School in Gauteng was reportedly beaten to death with a golf stick “and other things” by a teacher and a general assistant at Tsakane Secondary School, also in Gauteng, while fetching his schoolbag and cellphone from his girlfriend on Tuesday.
According to Sowetan Live, Nhlanhla Tshabalala had a toy gun with him when he went to the school to fetch his bag.
Staff members tried to take the toy gun from Nhlanhla but he refused, and a scuffle ensued.
“In the process, the child was seriously harmed and attacked using a golf stick and other things. According to the school, after retrieving the gun, they called the police and handed over the learner to the police in a good state,” the report quoted Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi as saying.
Because of Nhlanhla’s age, the police took him home.
It remained unclear in what state he was in when the police left him at his home, Lesufi said.

“…We need to get from police the state in which they left him when they left him here. Because of those grey areas and unexplained activities…we will appoint an independent person just to interview everyone and get the necessary evidence. On the basis of that evidence, if we need to act, we will act decisively as a department,” said Lesufi as quoted by the report.
Meanwhile, News24 reported that Nhlanhla’s father was seeking answers and accountability from the school.
“What happened to us is painful. My son died [allegedly] at the hands of adults who were expected to look after him. What is more hurtful to us as the family is that we don’t get satisfactory answers since the incident. We have a problem with Tsakane Secondary School principal (Pearl Ngcobo) who is protecting her staff members. I agree that when he (Nhlanhla) died, he was at the school he didn’t attend,” Nhlanhla’s father said as quoted by the report.

Ngcobo claimed that Nhlanhla arrived at the school under the influence of alcohol.
She was asked by Nhlanhla’s father to give him proof that Nhlanhla was intoxicated but she didn’t and instead gave him Nhlanhla’s books.
