Cape Town — The DA has stated that it will be filing a complaint against the National Minister of Transport, Sindiswe Chikunga with the ethics committee.
The decision comes after the tumultuous tax strike that happened in Cape Town last week that took a violent turn, resulting in arson, murder, and damage to infrastructure.
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Western Cape called for a stay away starting 3 August. Negotiations between Santaco, the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government saw taxi services resumed on 10 August again.
According to IOL, Chikunga accused the City of Cape Town of using the wrong by-laws to impound 6,000 taxis. She called for the immediate release of the impounded taxis.
Recent taxi strike violence in Cape Town revealed the ANC Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga’s support for SANTACO & strikers with misleading claims. Her actions demonstrated a politically calculated move.

However, in response, the DA’s Shadow Minister of Transport, Dr Chris Hunsinger said Chikunga openly sided with Santaco and the taxi operators.
“Minister Chikunga’s remarks reflect more than mere misjudgment. They were a calculated political move, a deliberate manipulation of this sensitive issue to benefit the ANC in the forthcoming national election,” Hunsinger said.
“Given this grievous misconduct, the DA will submit an ethics complaint to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests. Our submission will argue that Minister Chikunga’s intentional dissemination of falsehoods not only violated the principles of the Code but also failed to uphold the law and undermined the very integrity of Parliament,” he added.
