Cape Town – Cyril Ramaphosa is “very likely” to resign as president of both South Africa and the ruling African National Congress (ANC) “in the next couple of hours”, a News24 report said on Thursday.
This came as reports indicated that Ramaphosa was expected to address the nation on Thursday evening following the damning findings by an independent panel investigating the Phala Phala farm scandal.
ANC was set to hold emergency talks on Thursday, the day after the report paved the way for Ramaphosa’s possible impeachment.
Pressure has mounted on the president after the panel concluded that there was enough evidence to warrant a parliamentary debate on whether he should be removed.
According to News24, “a source close to the talks said Ramaphosa did not have to be convinced of the case to resign. The insider said Ramaphosa argued that it was in the best interest of the stability of the country for him to quit.
“There is nothing we can do now.”
IOL said that Ramaphosa was set to address the nation on Thursday evening.
