Qumbu — President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his sadness after the killing of six community patrol officers who were killed near Qumbu in the Eastern Cape.
Police revealed that the six men were killed on Sunday evening after they were attacked by eight men who were armed with rifles and handguns while on duty at the Lugongozo Secondary School.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, who visited the area Monday, told reporters that six guards had survived the attack, with three confirmed to be locals.
In a statement, Ramaphosa extended his sincere condolences to the families of the deceased, while he also wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured in the attacks.

“Our thoughts are with the families of these community members who died in the course of playing their part to keep their area safe. Following so soon after an equally tragic shooting at Lusikisiki, this new incident saddens and outrages us,” he said.
Ramaphosa added that it is South African’s resolve to stop criminals from terrorising communities and they are mistaken in believing they are untouchable. He hoped they would be brought to justice, along with anyone who does not report such atrocious acts.
“Government will continue to work with communities to ensure our homes, neighbourhoods and public spaces are safe and that criminals know they will pay for their deeds,” he added.
Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said Ramaphosa has welcomed the investigation into the matter and was confident that South African Police Services (SAPS) would find positive results in its investigation.
