Leso was initially charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but later changed to attempted murder, the report said.
The report said the matter was postponed to 8 February after two witnesses (the doctor who examined the child and another witness) did not attend the court proceedings.
Incidents of child abuse at daycare centres are not rare in South Africa.
In May, police reportedly investigated two cases of assault after videos showing teachers at a crèche in Pretoria surfaced.
Camera footage showed toddlers being manhandled and beaten by teachers.
The Citizen reported at the time that the videos were apparently captured by another teacher, who was appalled at what was happening at the crèche.
