Cape Town – South Africa’s former finance minister Tito Mboweni has expressed concern over people who attend large gatherings, parties, funerals and church services with no masks as if Covid-19 doesn’t exist anymore.
Mboweni took to Twitter and wrote:
“I don’t know what is wrong with us. We go to large gatherings, parties, funerals and church services. No masks! Why do we do these things? People are dying, relatives, friends.. Covid is still here.”

In a subsequent tweet, Mboweni further said he will never go to large gatherings.
“I refuse to go to large gatherings. I won’t go to any in-person meeting of the ANC NEC. I am not going there. I will attend virtually. In-Person? Nope,” wrote Mboweni in a tweet.

According to the current Covid-19 regulations, indoor and outdoor gatherings were limited to 1 000 and 2 000 people respectively, or 50% of the venue’s capacity.
When attending indoor gatherings, people were expected to wear masks.

In both indoor and outside gatherings, one must be vaccinated or be in possession of a valid certificate of a negative Covid-19 test, recognised by the World Health Organisation, and which was obtained not more than 72 hours before the date of the gathering.
