Cape Town – South Africa recorded 19 018 new Covid-19 cases and 20 deaths, the National Department of Health said on Friday.
This brings the country’s cumulative number of Covid-19 cases to 3 112 463.
“As of today the cumulative number of #COVID19 cases identified in SA is 3 112 469 with 19 018 new cases reported. Today 20 deaths have been reported bringing the total to 90 080 deaths. The cumulative number of recoveries now stand at 2 878 855 with a recovery rate of 92,5%,” said the department in a statement.

According to the National Institute For Communicable Diseases (NICD), a total number of 83 515 tests were conducted, with a positivity rate of 22.8%.
Gauteng continued to lead, with 9 250 new infections, followed by KwaZulu-Natal (2 506) and the Western Cape (2 067).
At the least was the Nothern Cape with 214 new recorded cases.

Meanwhile, South Africa will next month start giving Pfizer booster shots against coronavirus, a health official said on Friday.
“The first people who will qualify for the booster dose in South Africa will be people over the age of 60 years,” Dr Nicolas Crisp, director general at the health ministry, told a weekly news conference.
According to the National Department of Health, as of Friday, South Africa had administered more than 27 million vaccine doses across the country.
