Cape Town – Scammers posing as City of Cape Town officials are doing the rounds in the city, trying to con their way into residents’ homes by asking to check their electricity meters and plugs.
Once on the property, they steal personal property such as money and jewellery.
The City of Cape warned residents not to let officials on to their property without seeing a proper work order number and a valid City-issued identification tag.
According to EWN, one woman reported her jewellery was stolen after she allowed two well-dressed men claiming to be from the municipality into her home. One of them was wearing a reflective vest with a “permit” attached to it. He was also carrying a clipboard.
Luckily the woman realised before too long that she’d been duped and asked the men to leave her premises, but not before they had stolen a pair of gold earrings.
The City said the ID card must display the City of Cape Town logo, the name and surname of the staff member or contractor, and must contain an embedded photo of the staff member or contractor.
“We remind residents that the City’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department will make an appointment with residents before visiting their home. Municipal workers and contractors must carry a work order number specific to that dwelling and a legitimate City-issued identification card,” said the City’s mayoral committee member for energy, Beverley van Reenen.
If unsure, residents are urged to call the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.
