Cape Town – Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, has released new regulations under the South African Citizenship Act, stating that children of refugees seeking South African citizenship must speak at least one official language.
The regulations also require applicants to submit various documents, including proof of birth, parents’ asylum seeker or refugee status, school reports, proof of residence, biometrics, and proof of knowledge of one of the official languages.
Motsoaledi extended the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit until December 31, allowing Zimbabweans with the permit to enter and leave the country, provided they meet other border crossing requirements.
“No holder of exemption should be required to produce a valid exemption certificate/permit or an authorisation letter to remain in the republic when making an application for any category of the visas including temporary residence visa,” he said.
The government is also considering establishing specialised courts to address immigration issues and is working on new legislation to update existing laws on immigration, citizenship, and refugee protection.
