Cape Town — The South African Police Services (SAPS) has announced that five new ‘state of the art’ police stations have opened up in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN), Police Minister, Bheki Cele, announced.
Cele said this decision was made to improve community’s access to police stations and improve police response time after stations were opened in Gamalakhe, Donnybrook, Melmoth, KwaDabhazi and eManguzi, IOL reported.
“More police stations translate to increased footprint of the SAPS, especially in rural areas which are often far-flung from government services.” Police ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba said.
According to a SAPS statement, Bheki Cele briefed the media on the success of Operation Shanela after one year of its implementation and highlighted the forces behind its success.
“Ooeration Shanela is intensified from Thursday up until the early hours of Monday, this is guided by our crime pattern analysis which informs us that most crimes are reported to the police during these times.” Cele said.
“For the first time in the history of this policing intervention, we have opened up this high level meeting to South Africans through this media engagement.”
