Cape Town – Police in Mpumalanga have reportedly launched a manhunt for a group of around 20 gunmen following a cash-in-transit heist carried out on Saturday morning.
Reports indicated that the heist took place near Masoyi White River.
According to News24, the gunmen made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The report quoted police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala as saying that the incident happened when security guards were transporting cash on the R538 towards Dayizenza in Masoyi and a grey BMW collided with their vehicle, forcing them to stop.
There was a shootout, and the security guards were held at gunpoint.
“It is said that there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and security guards. In the process, the suspects detonated some explosives to force open the cash van,” EWN quoted Mohlala as saying.
The suspects then took the cash and fled the scene in a maroon Toyota Corolla and a silver-grey VW Polo without registration plates, the report said.
