Cape Town — The Mozambican man accused of the rape and murder of little Amantle Samane, Phethe Sara Simiao, made his first appearance in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The 24-year-old made his first appearance in court and was limping as he entered the courtroom. Simiao alleged that he had been assaulted while at the Johannesburg Prison, SABC News reported.
He is also scared that he may be killed if he is remanded in custody, with Magistrate David Mangu ordered that Simiao stay in prison but in a single cell.
He was expected to make a bail application but the matter has been postponed to December.
A police officer has told the court that Phethe Simiao told him this morning that he was attacked by wardens at Johannesburg Sun City prison.#KayaNews #AmantleSamane TT https://t.co/oCPblnDhaE pic.twitter.com/A5HpMRtKHh
