Cape Town – Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has responded to Elon Musk’s comments on safety in South Africa, saying that Cape Town is not just a “theme park” for tourists but a thriving city with real opportunities and effective governance.
Musk, responding to a query on X (formerly Twitter) about the safety of travelling to South Africa, described Cape Town as “generally kept safe for tourists” but warned that other parts of the country could be “extremely dangerous” for a woman traveling alone without a firearm.
“Cape Town is essentially a beautiful theme park and is generally kept safe for the tourists, so staying in the tourist areas is probably ok.
Thanks @ElonMusk, Table Mountain does make quite the backdrop!
But trust me, Cape Town’s not just for show. Warm people, great startups, and real heart live here. Alongside incredible beauty. Next time you’re in town, let me show you around.

“Other parts of the country can be extremely dangerous for a woman traveling alone with no gun. If visiting a trusted friend, listen very carefully to the directions of that friend. Do not get lost or go exploring without an escort,” he said .
Hill-Lewis countered Musk’s remarks with an invitation to experience Cape Town beyond its scenic attractions.
“Thanks, @ElonMusk, Table Mountain does make quite the backdrop! But trust me, Cape Town’s not just for show. Warm people, great startups, and real heart live here. Alongside incredible beauty. Next time you’re in town, let me show you around,” the mayor wrote on X.
He highlighted the city’s efforts in protecting property rights, attracting tourists to boost the local economy, and deploying more metro police to tackle crime.
The exchange follows ongoing debates about security in South Africa, with figures like Olympic swimmer Roland Schoeman also voicing concerns about violent attacks on farmers.
The mental gymnastics surrounding farm murders in South Africa are beyond ridiculous. Instead of acknowledging the brutal, targeted killings, people jump through hoops to justify, deflect, or outright deny reality.
•‘It’s because of apartheid!’ → So murder is justified?…— Roland Schoeman (@Rolandschoeman) February 19, 2025
