Cape Town – Corruption Watch is reportedly calling on authorities to conduct a thorough and expeditious investigation into the killing of Cloete Murray and his son, Thomas.
Cloete died in hospital last Sunday after he and his son were shot by unknown gunmen on the N1 highway in Midrand, Johannesburg, the previous day.
Thomas died instantly, while his father died in hospital.
Cloete was involved in several high-profile insolvency cases related to Eskom corruption and other tentacles of state capture.
At the time of his death, he was working on an application to ensure workers at embattled airline Comair were paid their outstanding salaries, eNCA quoted the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa as saying.
According to IOL, Corruption Watch and Transparency International on Thursday said they wanted law-enforcement agencies to act swiftly against those responsible for the death of the anti-corruption defender.

“South Africa is facing a crisis in terms of the rule of law, as levels of public confidence in our law-enforcement capabilities – not to mention the political will to hold criminals and the corrupt accountable – have dropped to an all-time low. As the most recent example, the brazen murder of Cloete Murray and his son sends a chilling and intimidating message to anyone seeking to end impunity for corruption and crime. This must represent a turning of the tide for our country.
“Authorities must act now to urgently investigate this case and take steps to strengthen crime-fighting apparatuses and institutions. Failure to investigate this killing as a matter of the highest priority will have a devastating impact on the struggle to curb violence and corruption,” the report quoted executive director for Corruption Watch Karam Singh
Sunday Times reported that the scope of the investigation into the assassination of the liquidator and his son was believed to have been widened to look into possible motives coming from within the liquidation industry.
A non-profit organisation, Forensics For Justice, is offering a R1 million reward for information on those who ordered the killing.
