Cape Town — The business sector has welcomed the appointment of Kgosientso Ramokgopa as Minister of Electricity, praising his willingness to collaborate with the private sector.
Speaking to eNCA, Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busi Mavuso said she had worked with Ramokgopa before.
“He understands the leverage that can actually be brought in by the private sector. He understands the skillset, the resources, the intelligence that resides within the private sector, and he understands the importance of government leveraging that,” Mavuso said.
She added that she did not doubt his ability and the pace at which he could bring in the private sector to help with the country’s energy crisis that the country currently faces.
Ramokgopa’s primary responsibilities include reducing the high levels of load shedding and overseeing the implementation of the government’s Energy Action Plan.
Business Leadership SA had previously expressed concern about the impact of former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter’s allegations of corruption, saying that “these developments are likely to have [an effect] on the efforts we are making to stabilise energy supply, fight against crime and corruption and improve investor confidence”.
“We take these allegations extremely seriously, particularly because of allegations that ministers and advisers in the Presidency knew about the continued high levels of corruption and apparently did nothing about it.
“We believe these allegations, if correct, are extremely damaging to Eskom, the efforts to address the energy crisis and to the nation,” the organisation said.
