Cape Town – A 13-year-old Grade 7 pupil from Vulindlela Primary School in Harrismith, Bloemfontein, tragically took her own life on April 8, reportedly after enduring relentless bullying by a fellow classmate.
According to IOL, the young girl — identified as Mbali — left behind a heartbreaking note explaining the reasons behind her decision.
Her mother discovered the note, which detailed the emotional trauma she had suffered due to bullying.
Provincial Department of Education spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, confirmed the contents of the note.
“The learner had expressed fear of her classmate, who had assaulted and bullied her in the previous term, and had even requested to be transferred to another school,” the repot quoted Ndaba as saying.
Following the tragedy, Free State MEC for Education, Dr Mamiki Qabathe Maboya, extended her condolences.
Speaking to Insiderchronicle, she said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a Grade 7 learner from Vulindlela Primary School. This incident is a stark reminder of the severe impact bullying can have on our children. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time.”
The incident has sparked widespread grief and outrage on social media. Many social media users expressed their sympathies, while others criticised the parents of the alleged bully, calling for accountability and greater parental involvement.
