Tshwane — Tshwane mayor, Cilliers Brink, faces a motion of no confidence (MONC) from the African National Congress (ANC), who is reportedly in talks with ActionSA to form a new coalition in Tshwane.
Brink’s party, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA have butted heads over the running of Tshwane, which subsequently led to the collapse of the coalition between the two parties. ActionSA said a new mayor was expected in Tshwane by the end of the week.
According to EWN, The ANC has tabled the MONC, saying Brink’s 18-month tenure in charge of Tshwane has been disastrous. Brink has denied this, saying the multi-party coalition (MPC) government made steady progress under his leadership.
Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brink will today face a motion of no confidence sanctioned by the ANC. University of Johannesburg’s Professor Theo Venter says the ANC’s strategy is to get mayoral positions in big metros ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

The ANC had previously filed two motions against him, but they were withdrawn before they could be voted on, meaning this is the first MONC Brink will face.
Since ActionSA’s withdrawal, Brink’s chances of survival are slim, as the coalition no longer has a majority in the council without ActionSA’s 19 members.
The DA picketed outside the Tshwane City Council ahead of the MONC against Brink. DA spokesperson, Kwena Moloto said it was clear that the residents of Tshwane back the mayor. He said the MONC was politically motivated, not because of a lack of service delivery, Newzroom Afrika reported.
“It’s a playbook we’ve seen in 2020 when the city was put under administration. It’s purely politically motivated. Herman Mashaba is feeling hurt by the 2024 election results, and instead of looking internally, they blamed the DA for that poor election showing. So it’s unfortunate that the people of Tshwane have to suffer as a result of that,” Moloto said.
DA supporters have gathered outside the Tshwane City Council ahead of the motion of no confidence in Mayor Cilliers Brink. While the ANC and ActionSA insist that his performance has been poor, his own party says they have ulterior motives. @naledimoleo has more.
