Cape Town — South Africa has called it a ‘decisive victory’ following the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) decision to rule in in favour of South Africa and against Israel.
The ICJ ruled that South Africa had sufficient evidence against Israel and the ruling revealed that Israel needs to take all necessary measures to prevent a genocide in Gaza.
The ruling from the ICJ revealed that Israel must stop the incitement against Palestine as a group, guarantee humanitarian aid, preserve evidence, adding that Israel has one month to submit a report detailing the progress of the provisional measures.
“By 16 votes to one, the state of Israel shall take immediate and effective measures to ensure the provision of urgently-needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by Palestinians in the Gaza strip.” Judge Donahue said.
International Minister, Naledi Pandor, said South Africa could not standby while innocent citizens died, adding that she is disappointed that no ceasefire was called for but hopes that the judgement will being about negotiations for a two-state solution to end the conflict.
In response to the ICJ’s decision, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyhu, said Israel will continue to do all that it can to defend its people and the country.
“Israel’s commitment to international law is unwavering. Equally unwavering is our sacred commitment to continue to defend our country and defend our people. Our war is against Hamas terrorists, not against Palestinian civilians. We will continue to facilitate humanitarian assistance, and to do our utmost to keep civilians out of harm’s way, even as Hamas uses civilians as human shields.”
This is a developing story.
