Cape Town – Gunmen attacked two jewellery stores at Pavilion shopping centre in KwaZulu-Natal, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuries to others.
The incident occurred before 6pm on a Sunday, with paramedics responding to find two active crime scenes.
“The first was at the robots before the mall where a police member was shot. He was in a critical condition and rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, due to his injuries, he passed away a short while later.
“The second scene was inside the mall at two popular jewellery stores. ALS Paramedics treated and transported two females, one pregnant, who were assaulted during the alleged robbery. Both patients were stabilised on scene by advanced life support paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required,” said Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics.
The gunmen targeted Premjis Jewellers and American Swiss, with staff and customers present during the attacks.
Jamieson said that the circumstances preceding the shooting remained unclear.
Police actively searched for the perpetrators who fled in a getaway car.
