Nelspruit – A man from Kanyamazane in Mpumalanga allegedly shot his girlfriend before his body was found with a bullet wound as well as a firearm next to him, police said on Thursday.
Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement that the 37-year-old female victim, Shirley Hassan, was on her way to work on Thursday morning when she was allegedly shot by her 42-year-old boyfriend, Phinda Matlaka, in full view of other people en route to work and schools.
Mohlala said that Matlaka then fled the scene to his father’s house also in Kanyamazane Ext 1, where he allegedly turned the gun on himself, ending his life.
Police were investigating a case of murder.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm reportedly used was stolen along with other items at Kanyamazane during a housebreaking incident on September 16, 2022.
The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela condemned the incident and urged members of the public to not resort to violence in their relationships.
“This incident is regrettable and we plead with members of the community to refrain from using violence as an alternative to resolve domestic issues,” she said.
“Gender Based Violence is regarded as a pandemic and the country is struggling to end the spate of women who are sadly killed in the hands of their partners,” the General added.
