Cape Town – The body of a young man who reportedly took his own life was recovered at the Bloukrans Bridge in the Western Cape on Thursday, December 29.
According to George Herald, the man is believed to have jumped off of the bridge, as per police reports.
The publisher reported that Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said he had taken his own life.
“Emergency services personnel were dispatched to a scene at Bloukrans Bridge on the N2 highway at Storms River at about 13:35 yesterday, after a man jumped from the bridge,” Spies was reported as saying.
Spies added that the body of the 19-year-old was recovered on Friday, December 30.
“He arrived at the bridge and exited this vehicle before he jumped. His body was located and a search and rescue operation activated,” he reportedly said.
“The team proceeded with the recovery operation to the retrieve the body of the victim at first daylight on Friday 30 December. Plettenberg Bay police opened an inquest docket for further investigation.”

The Citizen reports that this was the second body discovered in two months. A 47-year-old biker reportedly died after falling to the bottom of the same bridge.
The incident reportedly occurred in November, between the 6th and 7th.
According to Medical News Today, one of the most significant risk factors for suicide is being male.
Some significant risk factors for suicide include a personal history of suicide attempts, a history of experiencing physical or sexual abuse, having a mental health disorder, such as depression or bipolar disorder, and having a medical condition, such as chronic pain or terminal illness, that increases the risk of depression among other things.
