Cape Town — The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank announced that all beneficiaries need to switch from the Gold Cards to Postbank’s new Black Card.
In a statement, SASSA announced that recipients of the permanent grants won’t get access to their payments with the Gold Cards after 28 February 2025. Once the deadline passes, the Gold Cards will be blocked and it would not longer be possible to withdraw cash from ATMs or retailers with the card.
The card will also no longer be valid to perform any transactions including checking balances, statements or making purchases. The process to replace the SASSA Gold Card with the Postbank Black Card started in September 2024. SASSA said grant payments that started in the week of 4-6 February are last payments to be made with the SASSA Gold Cards.
“We appeal to beneficiaries that have not yet switched to Postbank Black Cards to take the opportunity and get the new cards before the deadline of 28 February 2025, to avoid not being able to access their SASSA grant payments,” Postbank CEO, Nikki Mbengashe said.

The new cards are available at Postbank sites, as well as retailers Beneficiaries require a valid South African ID to get their new card and it is also free of charge for all beneficiaries.
SASSA and Postbank said the new process is to ensure no one is left behind and all beneficiaries can replace their cards with no issues. Meanwhile, beneficiaries were also urged not to wait until the last minute or until their cards stop working.
“They must get their Postbank Black Cards now at their nearby card replacement site as that will guarantee they continue receiving their payments,” SASSA Acting CEO, Themba Matlou said.
Beneficiaries are urged to ensure they only liaise with authorised officials and keep their cards safe.
