Cape Town – Motorists in the Western Cape have been urged to be extra vigilant on the roads over the Easter weekend as an increase in traffic volumes is expected.
The provincial traffic services said they are working tirelessly and will remain visible on all major travel routes to avoid a repeat of last year where a total of 36 casualties was reported.
According to IOL, Safety and Security Mayoral Committee Member JP Smith reported that all hands were on deck and that the City of Cape Town was working closely with other enforcement and rescue agencies to ensure maximum safety.
He said that many challenges were linked to behaviour.
“If we all just do as we’re supposed to, like obeying the rules of the road, being courteous, using alcohol responsibly, and behaving in a manner that does not put lives at risk, it can be one of the best Easter long weekends yet, as far as safety goes,” the report quoted him as saying.

Transport MEC Ricardo Mackenzie said the Provincial Traffic Services (PTS) have been assisting drivers with free vehicle testing as well as conducting road safety operations throughout the province.
“Qualified and experienced staff will inspect your vehicle’s tyres, brakes, lights, suspension, CV (constant velocity) joints, electrical equipment, fuel supply system, exhaust, windscreen wipers, and licence disc.
“The Department’s Road Safety Officers will be present to share road safety information with motorists.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. It is up to each one of us, whether a driver, a passenger or a pedestrian, to be the change we want to see on the roads. Please be considerate and careful. Look after your own safety, and the safety of every other person on the road,” said Mackenzie.
