Cape Town – Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Kaizer Chiefs soccer player Luke Fleurs, who was shot during a hijacking in Honeydew.
The arrests were made in Slovoville, Soweto, following extensive efforts by a multi-disciplinary police team, EWN reported.
The suspects are believed to be part of a car hijacking syndicate in Gauteng.
“The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 April 2024, while the vehicle, that was already stripped, was recovered on Monday, 08 April 2024. Police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing. The suspects are expected to appear before Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Friday, 12 April 2024,” the report quoted spokesperson, Mavela Masondo as saying.
Luke Fleurs died las week following a shooting during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg.
The 24-year-old was fatally shot at a petrol station while awaiting assistance.
Two armed suspects instructed him to exit his car and shot him in the upper body before fleeing with his vehicle.
“While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series.
“The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice,” Masondo said at the time.
Despite being rushed to a medical centre, Fleurs was pronounced dead upon arrival.
