Cape Town — Police have confirmed the arrest of six people in two separate shooting incidents in the North West, as the African National Congress (ANC) condemned the tragic incidents.
In a statement, police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed that multi-discipline teams arrested four suspects, all from Lesotho and aged between 24 and 38, in Klerksdorp and the Kanana townships, in connection to the Kanana shootings, where eight people died and 13 people were injured.
“During the arrests, the team seized a Toyota Hilux Double Cab bakkie and more than 82 ammunition of different calibres. The suspects are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 30 July 2024, facing eight counts of murder, 13 of attempted murder and unlawful possession of ammunition,” Mokgwabone said.
Meanwhile, another shooting incident occurred in Freedom Park in the North West were more multi-discipline teams arrested two males, both aged 30.
“The suspects are expected to appear in the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court in Tlhabane on Tuesday, 30 July 2024, facing five counts of murder and defeating the ends of justice. Both teams are still hard at work to ensure the arrest of outstanding suspects.” Mokgwabone said.

Lieutenant General Kwena praised all members of the repsective teams for their decication and relentless efforts to arrest the suspects in such a short time after the incidents occurred.
He said lawlessness will not be tolerated and police would not hesitate tomobilise resources to ascertain that those who unashamedly commit heinous crimes are brought to book to face the full might of the law.
The African National Congress (ANC) has condemned the tragic shooting that took place at a local tavern in the Kanana location in North West. The party condemned the brutal act and described the horrific incident as reprehensible, as well as an assault on the safety and security of people in communities, IOL reported.
“The actions of these individuals are beyond words. They have inflicted immense pain on the families of the victims and the entire community. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” Zuko Godlimpi, the ANC’s acting national spokesperson, said.
The ANC remains committed to working alongside law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of all communities, condemning senseless violence and calling for collective efforts to eradicate it.
