Cape Town – The police have arrested a male suspect connected to the assassination of Rustenburg businessman Ben Gumbi, 49, outside a restaurant in the Rustenburg CBD.
The assassination was captured on camera in August.
The arrest was made in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, and was the result of a multi-disciplinary team’s efforts.
“Sibongiseni Ngubane, 33, appeared before the Rustenburg magistrate’s court on Thursday, 14 September 2023.
“He was remanded in custody pending further investigation and is expected to make a second court appearance on Tuesday, 19 September 2023,” said North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, according to Sowetan Live.
Gumbi was killed by two male suspects in what is believed to be related to a land dispute near the Sun City gaming and gambling resort.
He and his partner Jacob Ngakane were involved in the Bakubung Smart City Development, a significant project worth R3.2 billion, set to include various facilities and employ over 10 000 people, the report said.
According to Times Live, Gumbi’s family revealed that he had received death threats due to a land development dispute earlier in the month.
A video was shared in which Gumbi addressed these threats, warning those involved to be cautious and emphasising that they could face consequences.
