Cape Town – An eight-year-old boy was reportedly killed when a driver participating in an illegal street race lost control of his vehicle and crushed into a group of people in Daveyton, Gauteng.
Two other 12-year-old boys who sustained injuries were transported to a nearby hospital.
The incident, which happened on Sunday, resulted in the driver being assaulted by angry residents and his vehicle set alight.
According to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) the vehicle hit a group of people in Etwatwa.
“It is alleged that a white Toyota Etios and a white Nissan 1400 were engaged in an illegal drag race when the driver of the Toyota Etios lost control of the vehicle and collided with a group of children and adults, between the ages of 8 and 37 years, who were walking on the sidewalk,” said EMPD in a statement.
EMPD said the boy died at the scene while two sustained minor injuries.
